Post-Chernobyl Ukraine. Against the background of a fiery two-headed mutant cow with red stars – a nuclear mushroom, a symbol not only of the Chernobyl tragedy, but also of all Soviet rule. Destroyed churches fall, bell rings. Below is a handful of the underprivileged: a beggar–intellectual, a disabled veteran, a drunkard with a sick child collecting bottles and a praying grandmother. Prayer – it’s their only hope on the ladder (above) to heaven.
